FOHNEU
Federation of Occupational Health Nurses within the European Union
FOHNEU is a non-profit making organisation representing the largest single group of professionals in the field of occupational health. The Federation was founded in March 1993. The aims of FOHNEU are:
- To contribute to the total health, safety and well-being of the European working population.
- To raise the profile of Occupational Health Nursing within the European Union.
- To promote training, education and standards of professional qualifications and practice.
- To encourage research into areas of occupational health practice, education and management with publication of the results.
- To maintain an open dialogue with the EU organisations responsible for health and safety, public health and EU nursing authorities.
Since its inception in 1993 the Federation has developed and now has 20 of the 27 Member States represented on the Board and taking an active part in the work of FOHNEU. Approaches have been made to the remaining EU countries who are not yet members through a Twinning Project. A Core Curriculum for OHN education has been published and has been successfully implemented in OHN education programmes in some of the Member States. Four (4) Congresses have been held providing OHNs the opportunity to share research based knowledge and good practise. FOHNEU has also published three (3) journals with valuable information about European OH nursing.
FOHNEU has played a central role in the project "Harmonising Occupational Health
Nursing in the European Union - HOHNEU". The on-line Master degree in Occupational Health Nursing developed with Partners from the University of Sheffield UK, the University of Maribor Slovenia, the University of Krakow Poland, the Irish Nurses Organisation and the Danish Society of Occupational Health Nurses is now open for applications: www.sheffield.ac.uk/snm/online.
